Navigating the Imminent NHS Framework Update: What It Means for You

Friday 7th June 2024

With the imminent change mandated by NHS England and the government, all NHS Trusts will end the use of off-framework agencies by July 2024. This development might seem concerning, but if you are a candidate or client with us, there's no need to worry. Our agency is framework-approved, ensuring that these changes will not affect you. Here’s what you need to know to understand how this impacts different groups.

For Candidates

Already Registered with Us?
If you're a candidate currently registered with our agency, you can relax. Our framework approval means you can continue working with us without any disruption. We adhere to the highest standards and are fully compliant with the new regulations, ensuring your job opportunities remain secure and plentiful.

Working with an Off-Framework Agency?
If you are currently working with an off-framework agency, it's important to note that by July 2024, you will no longer be able to secure placements through them. The NHS will cease all associations with off-framework agencies. To ensure your employment remains viable, you will need to switch to a framework-approved agency like ours. This transition will not only keep you compliant with the new regulations but also provide better job security and access to more opportunities.

How can we help?
Navigating the upcoming changes can be daunting, but we’re here to help make the transition as smooth as possible for you. Our team is dedicated to supporting you through this change, offering personalised support for any advice, assistance with paperwork, or questions you may have. If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We're committed to ensuring your transition is as seamless as possible.

For Clients

Using Our Staffing Services?
For our valued clients already using our staffing services, rest assured that our framework approval ensures our operations are fully compliant with the upcoming NHS England regulations. You will continue to receive high-quality staffing solutions without any interruptions, maintaining the standards you expect from us.

Working with Off-Framework Agencies?
If you are currently engaging agency workers via off-framework suppliers, these workers will need to be removed or transferred to a framework agency before the July deadline. ICBs have been instructed to monitor adherence, with any off-framework use between now and July requiring sign-off by Trust Chief Executives.

How can we help?
We understand this has the potential to be a challenging time for you and the agency workers you engage with. Our team has already successfully delivered a range of strategies to help numerous Trusts remove off-framework spend and meet this mandate. If you wish to discuss this issue and learn how we can assist, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call us any time on 0330 999 0207.

Mental Health Awareness Week: Embracing Movement for Mental Health - Mediplacements Internal News

Mental Health Awareness Week: Embracing Movement for Mental Health

Monday 13th May 2024

Movement and mental health go hand in hand, yet it's not just about vigorous workouts. Small actions can make a big difference in your wellbeing, even through overcoming obstacles and integrating movement into your daily routine is a step in the right direction.

Movement isn't limited to gym sessions; it encompasses any activity that gets your body moving and energy flowing. From a leisurely stroll to a vigorous workout, every movement counts and is a personal choice.

Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, enhancing mood and reducing stress. Studies show it also aids in managing stress, improving sleep, self-esteem, and cognitive function, while reducing anxiety and fostering social connections.

Various obstacles, from low energy to financial constraints, can hinder physical activity. Recognising these barriers and finding personalised solutions is key to overcoming them and making movement accessible to all.

Here are some solutions to overcome movement obstacles:

1. Low Energy:
- Start with small, manageable activities like short walks or gentle stretches.
- Prioritise getting enough sleep and maintaining a balanced diet to boost energy levels.
- Break physical activity into shorter, more frequent sessions throughout the day rather than trying to do it all at once.

2. Financial Constraints:
- Look for free or low-cost exercise options such as walking or jogging outdoors, using workout videos on YouTube, or utilising community recreation centres.
- Explore affordable fitness apps or online programs that offer guided workouts at a fraction of the cost of gym memberships.
- Check if your workplace or community offers discounts or subsidies for fitness-related activities.

3. Lack of Time:
- Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine by taking the stairs instead of the lift, parking further away from your destination, or doing household chores more vigorously.
- Schedule exercise sessions into your calendar like any other appointment to ensure they become a priority.
- Consider combining socialising with physical activity by exercising with friends or family members.

4. Lack of Motivation:
- Set achievable and realistic goals for yourself, and track your progress to stay motivated.
- Find activities that you enjoy and look forward to, whether it's dancing, hiking, or playing a sport.
- Join a fitness class or group where you can receive support and encouragement from others with similar goals.

5. Physical Limitations or Health Concerns:
- Consult with a healthcare professional or physiotherapist to create a safe and suitable exercise plan tailored to your abilities and health needs.
- Focus on low-impact activities like swimming, yoga, or tai chi that are gentle on the joints and muscles.
- Listen to your body and modify exercises as needed to prevent injury and discomfort.

By addressing these obstacles and implementing personalised solutions, individuals can overcome barriers to physical activity and make movement an integral part of their daily lives.

Let's empower ourselves to prioritise movement for our mental wellbeing. Together, let's break down barriers and embrace a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Fostering Inclusivity: Deaf Awareness Week in Healthcare - Mediplacements Internal News

Fostering Inclusivity: Deaf Awareness Week in Healthcare

Tuesday 7th May 2024

This week, from 6th to 12th May, marks Deaf Awareness Week, a time to celebrate the deaf community, promote understanding, and advocate for inclusivity. At Mediplacements, we recognise the importance of raising awareness, particularly in healthcare settings where effective communication is vital. As a leading healthcare recruitment company, we understand the significance of recruiting audiologists and other professionals who champion accessibility and support for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Why Deaf Awareness Matters in Healthcare
Deaf Awareness Week provides an opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments in healthcare settings. Effective communication is crucial in providing quality care, and without proper understanding and accommodation, deaf patients may face barriers in accessing healthcare services.

Imagine trying to convey symptoms, concerns, or medical history without clear communication. It can lead to misunderstandings, misdiagnoses, and ultimately impact patient outcomes. That's why raising awareness about the needs of the deaf community is essential for creating more inclusive healthcare environments.

Promoting Deaf Awareness in Healthcare Settings
Here are some key strategies for promoting deaf awareness in healthcare settings:
1. Training Healthcare Professionals: Providing training to healthcare professionals on deaf awareness, including basic sign language and communication techniques, can significantly improve interactions with deaf patients.
2. Accessible Communication Tools: Implementing accessible communication tools such as visual aids, written materials, or video remote interpreting services can facilitate effective communication between healthcare providers and deaf patients.
3. Creating Inclusive Policies: Healthcare facilities should develop policies that prioritise accessibility and accommodation for deaf and hard of hearing patients, including the provision of sign language interpreters or captioning services as needed.
4. Raising Public Awareness: Educating the public about deaf culture, communication methods, and the challenges faced by the deaf community can help reduce stigma and promote understanding.

The Role of Audiologists and Healthcare Professionals
Audiologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing impairments, as well as in advocating for the needs of the deaf community. By recruiting and supporting audiologists and other healthcare professionals who are passionate about deaf awareness, we can make significant strides towards creating more inclusive healthcare environments.

Get Involved in Deaf Awareness Week
Deaf Awareness Week is an excellent opportunity to get involved and show your support for the deaf community. Whether it's organising events, sharing information on social media, or simply taking the time to learn more about deaf culture and communication, every action counts.
At Mediplacements, we encourage healthcare professionals and organisations to participate in Deaf Awareness Week and commit to promoting accessibility and inclusivity in healthcare settings.

As Deaf Awareness Week takes place, let's reaffirm our commitment to creating healthcare environments that are welcoming and accessible to all. By raising awareness, providing education, and advocating for the needs of the deaf community, we can make a positive difference in the lives of patients and healthcare professionals alike. Join us in celebrating Deaf Awareness Week and working towards a more inclusive future for healthcare.

Stress Awareness Month: 7 Tips for Managing Stress as a Healthcare Professional - Mediplacements Internal News

Stress Awareness Month: 7 Tips for Managing Stress as a Healthcare Professional

Tuesday 2nd April 2024

Working in healthcare can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be stressful. Healthcare professionals face high levels of responsibility and pressure, and the work can be emotionally and physically demanding.

Stress can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that can have negative effects on both personal and professional life. However, there are strategies that healthcare professionals can use to manage stress and prevent burnout.

Here are some tips for managing stress while working in healthcare:
1. Practice self-care: Take time for yourself to recharge and do things you enjoy. This could be exercise, spending time with friends and family, reading a book, or practicing a hobby.
2. Set boundaries: It's important to set boundaries to protect your time and energy. Learn to say no to requests that are not urgent or necessary, and delegate tasks when possible.
3. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, can help you to stay present and calm in the moment. Consider taking a mindfulness course or using a meditation app to develop your mindfulness skills.
4. Connect with colleagues: Having a support network can help you to manage stress and prevent burnout. Connect with colleagues and make time to talk about both work-related and personal issues.
5. Seek support: If you're struggling with stress or burnout, don't be afraid to seek support from a mental health professional. They can provide you with tools and techniques to help manage stress and prevent burnout.
6. Prioritise self-awareness: It's important to be aware of your own stress levels and to know when to take a break or seek support. This self-awareness can help you to prevent burnout and maintain your overall well-being.
7. Stay organised: Organisation can help reduce stress levels. Make lists, prioritise tasks, and use technology to streamline your workflow.

In conclusion, stress is an inevitable part of working in healthcare, but there are strategies that can help manage it. Practicing self-care, setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, connecting with colleagues, seeking support, prioritising self-awareness, and staying organised can all help healthcare professionals to manage stress and prevent burnout.

Remember if you ever feel overwhelmed or stressed, your Mediplacements recruitment consultant is always here to help and support you.

Celebrating Healthcare Science Week 2024: Honouring the Unsung Heroes - Mediplacements Internal News

Celebrating Healthcare Science Week 2024: Honouring the Unsung Heroes

Tuesday 12th March 2024

In a world where healthcare often takes centre stage, there are countless unsung heroes working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the well-being of patients. As we celebrate Healthcare Science Week 2024, it’s time to shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of our dedicated audiologists, biomedical scientists, cardiac physiologists, pharmacists, radiographers, phlebotomists, and sterile service technicians. These professionals play pivotal roles in shaping the landscape of healthcare and improving countless lives every day.

Audiologists: Enhancing Hearing, Enriching Lives
For many, the gift of hearing is often taken for granted until it begins to fade. Audiologists are the guardians of hearing health, providing crucial support to individuals with hearing impairments. Through diagnostic assessments, personalised treatment plans, and the fitting of hearing aids, audiologists empower individuals to reconnect with the world around them. Their commitment to restoring and preserving hearing not only enhances communication but also enriches the quality of life for countless individuals and their loved ones.

Biomedical Scientists: Unlocking the Mysteries of Disease
Behind every medical breakthrough lies the diligent work of biomedical scientists. These meticulous investigators are at the forefront of medical research, uncovering the underlying mechanisms of disease and developing innovative diagnostic tools and treatments. From analysing blood samples to studying cellular processes, biomedical scientists play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of health and disease. Their relentless pursuit of knowledge is paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries that have the potential to revolutionise healthcare and save lives.

Cardiac Physiologists: Guardians of Heart Health
The heart, with its rhythmic beat, is the engine of life itself. Cardiac physiologists are the dedicated professionals tasked with ensuring the optimal function of this vital organ. Through a range of diagnostic tests, such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and echocardiograms, cardiac physiologists assess cardiac function and identify potential abnormalities. Their expertise is instrumental in the early detection and management of cardiovascular conditions, ultimately helping patients lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Pharmacists: Pillars of Patient Care
In the complex tapestry of healthcare, pharmacists stand as pillars of patient care. Beyond dispensing medications, these highly trained professionals serve as trusted advisors, providing invaluable guidance on medication management, dosage regimens, and potential drug interactions. Pharmacists play a vital role in promoting medication safety and adherence, ensuring that patients receive the most effective and appropriate treatments for their individual needs. Their expertise extends far beyond the pharmacy counter, encompassing collaborative care with healthcare teams to optimise patient outcomes and improve overall health.

Radiographers: Capturing Images, Saving Lives
Radiographers are the unseen heroes behind the diagnostic images that guide medical decisions. Using advanced imaging technologies such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, radiographers produce detailed images of the body's internal structures, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. Their keen eye for detail and technical expertise enable them to capture images with precision, providing vital information that clinicians rely on to deliver timely and effective care to patients.

Phlebotomists: Navigating the Veins, Easing Fears
Drawing blood may seem routine, but for many patients, it can be a daunting experience. Phlebotomists are skilled professionals who specialise in the art of venipuncture, carefully navigating the veins to collect blood samples for diagnostic testing. Beyond their technical proficiency, phlebotomists possess a compassionate demeanour that helps alleviate the fears and anxieties of patients undergoing blood draws. Their gentle touch and reassuring presence make a significant difference in ensuring a positive patient experience.

Sterile Service Technicians: Guardians of Infection Control
In the realm of healthcare, infection control is paramount to patient safety. Sterile service technicians play a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness and sterility of medical equipment and instruments. Through meticulous cleaning, disinfection, and sterilisation procedures, these dedicated professionals ensure that medical devices are free from harmful pathogens and ready for safe use in patient care. Their vigilance in upholding stringent sterilisation protocols is essential in preventing the spread of infections and safeguarding the well-being of patients and healthcare providers alike.

As we celebrate Healthcare Science Week 2024, let us take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the audiologists, biomedical scientists, cardiac physiologists, pharmacists, radiographers, phlebotomists, and sterile service technicians who dedicate themselves to the noble pursuit of healing. Their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts embody the very essence of healthcare science, transforming lives and inspiring hope in the hearts of patients and their families worldwide. Together, let us honour and celebrate these unsung heroes who continue to make a profound difference in the world of healthcare.

Unlocking Success: Recruitment Apprenticeships at Mediplacements - Mediplacements Internal News

Unlocking Success: Recruitment Apprenticeships at Mediplacements

Monday 5th February 2024

As we step into National Apprentice Week, we took the opportunity to sit down with one of our talented apprentices here at Mediplacements to delve into their journey and experiences. With apprenticeships becoming an increasingly popular choice for career development, we were curious to learn why our apprentice chose this path and how they are finding it. Throughout our conversation, we explored the motivations behind their decision, their impressions of the apprenticeship journey thus far, and the ways in which it has enriched their professional growth.

Join us as we gain insights into the apprentice's perspective, uncovering the invaluable benefits of choosing an apprenticeship in the dynamic world of recruitment.

Please can you tell us about your experience so far as an apprentice resourcer at Mediplacements?
Being an apprentice resourcer at Mediplacements has been very enjoyable and educational. I feel like I am learning something new every day which will enhance my skills for my career. Since my first day at Mediplacements, I have felt very welcomed and included, and interconnected with the company as a whole.

What motivated you to pursue an apprenticeship in recruitment over more traditional education or training programs (i.e. college courses, 6th form etc)?
I wanted to do an apprenticeship in recruitment as I did not think I would have benefited personally from going to 6th form or college. I believe an apprenticeship was the best option for me as you can gain on-the-job experience while also gaining a qualification at the end of your apprenticeship.

How have you found the balance between learning on the job and managing your NVQ work?
Here at Mediplacements, they have been amazing with helping me balance my learning on the job and my NVQ work by allowing me to have time each day to complete my NVQ work. I feel very confident that I will be able to get my qualification at the end of my apprenticeship because of all the support I have been given by the company.

What “skills for life” do you think you are developing through your apprenticeship, both personally and professionally? How do you think these will benefit your career aspirations?
While doing an apprenticeship, I feel like I have developed life skills that I will use throughout my career in recruitment, e.g. how to speak to candidates on the phone, using different databases, rules, and regulations that a company would require, and many more. I also think an apprenticeship allows you to benefit personally by giving you real life experience which has helped me gain confidence and ambition for my future.

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship? Would you recommend this career path to them?
My advice for someone who is considering an apprenticeship is that if you are more of a practical, hands-on learner then this path is for you. You will be getting a qualification like you would in college or 6th form, and you are also getting paid to work as well, which will help you to become a more independent person.

How would you describe the company culture and support for apprenticeships at Mediplacements? Would you recommend for other aspiring apprentices to apply to work with us specifically?
Mediplacements has been all I could ask for while doing my apprenticeship. They have helped me with my on-the-job training and off-the-job training. Everyone here has made me feel very welcomed, and I feel very supported while doing my apprenticeship. I would recommend anyone who is interested in recruitment and wanting to do an apprenticeship to apply to work with Mediplacements.

If you’re looking to start a rewarding journey in recruitment, you’re in luck! We’re always looking for talented young individuals to join our resourcing team as an apprentice, where you will be provided with a unique blend of on-the-job experience and formal qualification. Breaking the Blue Monday Myth: Infusing Positivity into Your Week - Mediplacements Internal News

Breaking the Blue Monday Myth: Infusing Positivity into Your Week

Monday 15th January 2024

Happy Monday to you all, and yes, we're well aware that today has been dubbed as Blue Monday, supposedly the gloomiest day of the year. But let's switch gears this time around and embrace a fresh perspective for 2024's Blue Monday.

So, what's the deal with Blue Monday, you ask? Created back in 2004 by psychologist Cliff Arnall, this day was concocted as a formula, blending factors like weather, debt, salary, post-Christmas time, failed resolutions, low motivation, and a nagging need to act. But here's the twist – let's not give in to the negativity associated with it.

Here's a new narrative for this year's Blue Monday:
Challenge the Norm: Who said Mondays have to be blue? It's just a day, and the power to make it positive is entirely in your hands.
Mindfulness Over Myth: Instead of buying into the idea of a universally gloomy day, let's practice mindfulness. Recognise your emotions without letting them define your day.
Unique Experiences: We're all navigating different journeys, and that means our experiences and feelings vary. Your Monday might be someone else's Friday, so let's celebrate the diversity of emotions.
Flip the Script: Rather than dreading Monday, look at it as an opportunity for a fresh start. Set some small, achievable goals for the week, and let Monday be your launchpad.

Now, let's counter those perceived Monday blues with a burst of positivity:
Gratitude Moment: Take a moment to appreciate the good things in your life. What are you thankful for today? It could be as simple as a warm cup of coffee or a friendly smile.
Connect with Nature: Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and soak in some sunlight. A quick nature break can do wonders for your mood.
Random Acts of Kindness: Spread some joy today! Whether it's a compliment, a kind gesture, or helping someone out, infusing positivity into your day can create a ripple effect.
Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Completing a task, mastering a skill, or even just getting through the morning – it all counts.

This year, let's redefine Blue Monday as a canvas for positivity and a chance to break free from the stereotypes. Mondays can be vibrant, full of potential, and a fantastic beginning to an amazing week. So, here's to turning Blue Monday into a day of opportunity, growth, and positive vibes! Cheers to conquering the day with a smile and making it uniquely yours!

Locum agencies recognise the importance of work-life balance and actively support their professionals in achieving it. They understand that a balanced professional life leads to improved patient care and overall career satisfaction.
5. The Beauty of Variety:
Locum work provides exposure to a wide array of healthcare settings. This variety keeps your work stimulating and fresh, effectively preventing burnout and nurturing a more enjoyable work-life balance.

Creating Hope through Action: Empowering Healthcare Professionals on World Suicide Prevention Day - Mediplacements Internal News

Creating Hope through Action: Empowering Healthcare Professionals on World Suicide Prevention Day

Friday 8th September 2023

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10th, is a day that underscores the critical importance of mental health care and suicide prevention. Healthcare professionals, your role in this vital mission cannot be overstated. This year's theme, "Creating Hope through Action," beautifully encapsulates the proactive steps you can take to make a profound impact on the lives of individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts. This blog is dedicated to highlighting the significance of your role and offering practical insights on how you can contribute to creating hope through action.

Understanding the Theme - Creating Hope through Action: The theme for 2023, "Creating Hope through Action," encourages us to go beyond passive empathy and rhetoric, urging us to take tangible steps towards suicide prevention. As healthcare professionals, you stand at the forefront of this mission. Your actions, both significant and subtle, can instil hope in those who are suffering, providing them with a lifeline when they need it the most.

The Crucial Role of Healthcare Professionals: Healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to have a lasting impact on individuals in crisis. Your direct interactions, compassionate care, and expert guidance can make all the difference. By building rapport with your patients, you create a safe space where they can openly share their struggles. Your non-judgmental attitude and empathetic approach can validate their feelings and foster a sense of belonging.

Practical Steps to Create Hope through Action:
1. Active Listening: Truly listen to your patients without interruption or judgment. Let them express their thoughts and emotions and validate their feelings.
2. Assessment and Risk Management: Conduct thorough assessments to identify individuals at risk of suicide. Develop personalised safety plans to help them navigate moments of crisis.
3. Education: Equip yourself with updated knowledge about suicide prevention strategies, risk factors, and warning signs. In turn, educate your patients and their families about these crucial aspects.
4. Crisis Intervention: Develop strong crisis intervention skills to provide immediate support during times of acute distress. Your presence and guidance can prevent impulsive actions.

Essential Tips for Healthcare Workers: How to Avoid Burnout and Thrive in Challenging Times

Thursday 25th May 2023

It is no secret that COVID-19 has put immense pressure on our health services over the last couple of years. Healthcare workers play a vital role in our society, and their work can be incredibly rewarding. However, the demands of the job can also lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.

Here are some tips to help you avoid burnout as a healthcare worker:
1. Prioritise self-care: Make time for self-care activities that you enjoy and that help you relax, such as exercise, meditation, reading, or spending time with loved ones. Prioritise getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks throughout the day.
2. Set realistic expectations: It's important to set realistic expectations for yourself and your workload. Don't take on more than you can handle, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
3. Develop a support system: Having a support system can help you cope with stress and burnout. This can include colleagues, friends, family, or a therapist. Make time to connect with others and share your experiences.
4. Take breaks throughout the day: Taking short breaks throughout the day can help you recharge and stay focused. Use your breaks to do something that you enjoy, such as taking a walk, listening to music, or simply taking a few deep breaths.
5. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can help you stay present and focused, even when you're feeling stressed. Practice mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, throughout the day to help you stay centred.
6. Seek out professional help: If you're feeling overwhelmed or burned out, don't hesitate to seek out professional help. A therapist or counsellor can help you develop coping strategies and work through your feelings.

In conclusion, healthcare workers are at risk of burnout due to the demands of their jobs. However, by prioritising self-care, setting realistic expectations, developing a support system, taking breaks throughout the day, practicing mindfulness, and seeking out professional help when needed, healthcare workers can avoid burnout and continue to provide excellent care to their patients.

Remember, taking care of yourself is essential to taking care of others.

Prioritising Mental Health: Tips for Medical Professionals During Mental Health Awareness Week - Mediplacements Internal News

Prioritising Mental Health: Tips for Medical Professionals During Mental Health Awareness Week

Monday 15th May 2023

Mental health is an issue that affects millions of people worldwide, and it's an issue that deserves our attention. This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week, an annual event that raises awareness of mental health and promotes positive mental well-being. In light of this important week, it's essential to discuss how medical professionals deal with anxiety in the workplace.

Working in the medical field is often high-pressure, stressful, and demanding, and it's no secret that medical professionals experience anxiety and other mental health challenges. However, despite the importance of the issue, many medical professionals still find it difficult to talk openly about their mental health struggles.

So here are several tips you can use as a medical healthcare professional to reduce anxiety in the workplace:
1. Practice self-care: It's important to take care of yourself first before you can take care of others. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, and practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.
2. Set boundaries: It's important to set boundaries with patients and colleagues to prevent burnout. Learn to say no when you need to and prioritise tasks that are most important.
3. Seek support: Seek support from colleagues, mentors, or a therapist if you are feeling overwhelmed. Talking about your feelings with someone who understands can help you feel less isolated.
4. Practice time management: Create a schedule that allows you to prioritise tasks and manage your time efficiently. This can help you feel more in control and reduce anxiety.
5. Take breaks: Take short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. This can help you stay focused and productive.
6. Use positive self-talk: Use positive self-talk to combat negative thoughts and self-doubt. Remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments.
7. Stay organised: Keep your workspace organised to reduce stress and increase productivity. Knowing where everything is can also save time and reduce anxiety.

By practicing these tips, you can reduce anxiety and stress and improve your overall well-being. It's crucial to recognise the importance of mental health in the medical profession, not only for the well-being of medical professionals themselves but also for the quality of care that patients receive. By acknowledging the challenges that medical professionals face and addressing them head-on, we can create a healthier and more supportive work environment for everyone involved.

Stress Awareness Month: Effects of Stress on the Human Body - Mediplacements Internal News

Stress Awareness Month: Effects of Stress on the Human Body

Monday 24th April 2023

Stress is a natural response of the body to perceived threats or challenges. While short-term stress can be beneficial in certain situations, chronic stress can have severe effects on the human body. It can affect the central nervous, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and muscular systems. In this article, we will discuss the effects of chronic stress on each of these systems and its long-term consequences.

Central nervous and endocrine systems
Your central nervous system (CNS) oversees your “fight or flight” response. In your brain, the hypothalamus gets the ball rolling, telling your adrenal glands to release the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rev up your heartbeat and send blood rushing to the areas that need it most in an emergency, such as your muscles, heart, and other important organs.

When the perceived fear is gone, the hypothalamus should tell all systems to go back to normal. If the CNS fails to return to normal, or if the stressor doesn’t go away, the response will continue.

Chronic stress is also a factor in behaviours such as overeating or not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal.

Respiratory and cardiovascular systems
Stress hormones affect your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. During the stress response, you breathe faster to quickly distribute oxygen-rich blood to your body. If you already have a breathing problem like asthma or emphysema, stress can make it even harder to breathe.

Under stress, your heart also pumps faster. Stress hormones cause your blood vessels to constrict and divert more oxygen to your muscles, so you’ll have more strength to act. But this also raises your blood pressure.

As a result, frequent or chronic stress will make your heart work too hard for too long. When your blood pressure rises, so do your risks for having a stroke or heart attack.

Digestive system
Under stress, your liver produces extra blood sugar (glucose) to give you a boost of energy. If you’re under chronic stress, your body may not be able to keep up with this extra glucose surge. Chronic stress may increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The rush of hormones, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate can also upset your digestive system. You’re more likely to have heartburn or acid reflux thanks to an increase in stomach acid. Stress doesn’t cause ulcers (a bacterium called H. pylori often does), but it can increase your risk for them and cause existing ulcers to act up.

Stress can also affect the way food moves through your body, leading to diarrhoea or constipation. You might also experience nausea, vomiting, or a stomach-ache.

Immune system
Stress stimulates the immune system, which can be a plus for immediate situations. This stimulation can help you avoid infections and heal wounds. But over time, stress hormones will weaken your immune system and reduce your body’s response to foreign invaders. People under chronic stress are more susceptible to viral illnesses like the flu and the common cold, as well as other infections. Stress can also increase the time it takes you to recover from an illness or injury.

Muscular system
Your muscles tense up to protect themselves from injury when you’re stressed. They tend to release again once you relax, but if you’re constantly under stress, your muscles may not get the chance to relax. Tight muscles cause headaches, back and shoulder pain, and body aches. Over time, this can set off an unhealthy cycle as you stop exercising and turn to pain medication for relief.

Chronic stress can have a detrimental impact on the human body. It can lead to physical and mental health issues and affect the quality of life. The effects of stress on the central nervous, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and muscular systems are well documented. Learning how to manage stress and seeking professional help when needed can help prevent long-term consequences. Taking care of oneself and managing stress levels can lead to a healthier and happier life.

Mediplacements Observing Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Importance of Seeking Professional Help - Mediplacements Internal News

Mediplacements Observing Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Importance of Seeking Professional Help

Tuesday 28th February 2023

As we observe Eating Disorders Awareness Week, it’s important to acknowledge the significant impact that eating disorders have on the lives of those affected and their loved ones. At Mediplacements, we are proud to provide Dietitians who specialise in treating patients with eating disorders to the NHS and private sectors, and we want to raise awareness about the importance of seeking professional help.

Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that can have serious physical and emotional consequences. They affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. According to recent research from the NHS information centre, up to 6.4% of adults in the UK display signs of an eating disorder, with approximately 1.25 million people being affected by this illness, and 25% of those are male.

It’s important to remember that eating disorders are not just about food, but rather, they are about feelings and the way individuals interact with food. People with eating disorders may use food to cope with stress, anxiety, or emotional pain. The way they eat, or don’t eat, can make them feel more in control or provide temporary relief from their emotional distress.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, it’s essential to seek professional help as soon as possible. Speak to your GP about medication and talking therapies. There is also support available to your loved ones who can ask for a carer’s assessment from your local social services.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week serves as a reminder that help is available, and recovery is possible. At Mediplacements, we are committed to supplying high-quality dietetics staff to help treat those affected by eating disorders, and we encourage anyone who needs help to reach out and seek the support they need to start their journey towards recovery.

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week: Understanding the Importance of Screening and Risk Reduction - Mediplacements Internal News

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week: Understanding the Importance of Screening and Risk Reduction

Wednesday 25th January 2023

This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cervical screening and the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer. As the name suggests, the focus of this week is on prevention, which is key to one day making cervical cancer a thing of the past.

During this week, we want to highlight the importance of cervical screening, as well as provide information on the signs, symptoms, and risks associated with cervical cancer, as well as ways to reduce your risk.

What is Cervical Cancer?

• Cervical cancer is a cancer that's found anywhere in the cervix.
• The cervix is the opening between the vagina and the womb (uterus).
• It's part of the reproductive system and is sometimes called the neck of the womb.
• Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by an infection from certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).
• It can often be prevented by attending cervical screening, which aims to find and treat changes to cells before they turn into cancer.
• Cervical cancer usually grows very slowly. How serious it is will depends on how big it is, if it has spread and your general health.

Symptoms

• Vaginal bleeding that's unusual for you – including bleeding during or after sex, between your periods or after the menopause, or having heavier periods than usual
• Changes to your vaginal discharge, including odour
• Pain during sex
• Pain in your lower back, between your hip bones (pelvis), or in your lower tummy or legs
• Weight loss
• Fatigue that is constant

If you have another condition like fibroids or endometriosis, you may get symptoms like these regularly.

Who is at risk of cervical cancer?

• Human Papilloma Virus -The most important risk factor for cervical cancer is HPV. Most infections occur after people become sexually active, and most people clear the virus without problems. There are over 100 different types of HPV. Not all of them are linked to cancer. HPV vaccines can prevent people from developing certain cancers, including cervical cancer.
• Immune system deficiency - People with a lowered immune system have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. A lowered immune system can be caused by immune suppression from corticosteroid medications, organ transplantation, treatments for other types of cancer.
• Herpes - People who have genital herpes have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer.
• Smoking - People who smoke tobacco are about twice as likely to develop cervical cancer compared with people who do not smoke.
• Age - People younger than 20 years old rarely develop cervical cancer. The risk goes up between the late teens and mid-30s. People past this age group remain at risk and need to have regular cervical cancer screenings.
• Socioeconomic factors - Cervical cancer is more common among groups of people who are less likely to have access to screening for cervical cancer.

How to reduce your risk

• Reporting to GP any abnormal bleeding/symptoms
• Being vaccinated against HPV (Human papillomavirus)
• Having regular cervical screening from age 25+

Why should I get tested?

Screening is the best way to find out if you have HPV, which is the single biggest risk for developing cervical cancer. Screening can pick up changes in the cells of your cervix that could lead to cervical cancer in the future.

Cervical cancer is a very treatable disease if detected in its earliest stages. Importantly most abnormalities are detected at a pre-cancerous state.

How to beat the blues this Blue Monday - Mediplacements Internal News

How to beat the blues this Blue Monday

Monday 16th January 2023

Happy Monday All! Even though today is known for being the most depressing day of the year.
Is it really? Don’t give in to myth of Blue Monday! You can still have a great day and a positive start to the week.

What is Blue Monday?
It is believed to be the most depressing day of the year. Well, it is according to psychologist, Cliff Arnall, who created the concept of Blue Monday in 2004, when he created the formula for the January blues.
The calculation was carried out by Cliff for travel company, Sky Travel, who then went on to use the concept as a PR stunt to promote their winter deals.

The formula, which is based on the main factors that are most likely to contribute to low mood, is:

These are the factors in the calculation:
W = Weather
D = Debt
d = Monthly salary
T = Time since Christmas
Q = Time since failing our new year's resolutions
M = Low motivational levels
Na = The feeling of a need to act

Ways to feel more positive – remember:
1. It’s a myth - There are no scientific studies to say that Blue Monday is actually Blue Monday.
2. We all have good and bad days - Everybody’s situation is different, and it’s therefore impossible for all of us to feel the same way on one day.
3. It’s a good opportunity to check in on our mental health - Rather than automatically think you feel blue on Blue Monday, reflect on your mental wellbeing and continue to do it all-year round.
4. Talk things through with other people - This is really useful for protecting our mental health, and sometimes, a problem shared can be a problem halved.

Doing these things can also help you to beat the blues:
Focus on the good things that are happening in your life and try not to be dominated by things that may have gone wrong or aren’t going your way.
Be grateful for what has happened – this will help you focus on the positive things that are taking place all around you. For example, you can be grateful for having a good sleep, completing your work on time, your colleague helping you out or your partner doing the shopping for you.
Try to smile and laugh a lot more – we’re not saying you should turn into The Joker, but studies have found that laughter can help relieve depression, stress and anxiety. A simple laugh or smile, at ourselves or other people, can instantly lift our spirits.
Use positive affirmations – try to start every day with a positive thought, saying, memory or quote that sets you up for the best possible start. Don’t forget to keep reminding yourself of it throughout the day too.

Speaking to loved ones is a great way to help beat the blues! That is why Mediplacements are supporting Samaritans campaign for 'Brew Monday' - hoping to squash the theory of Blue Monday and just to remind people to reach out for a cuppa and a chat.

Click here to find out more about ‘Brew Monday’.

Introducing our new and exclusive partnership: Schoen Clinic UK Group - Mediplacements Internal News

Introducing our new and exclusive partnership: Schoen Clinic UK Group

Tuesday 10th January 2023

The Placement Group, a leading healthcare recruitment and staffing solutions provider and Schoen Clinic UK, a highly specialised and award-winning private healthcare provider have entered into a new and forward-thinking strategic partnership that will significantly improve the efficiency of temporary, permanent, and internal staffing provisions across the group. The agreement's emphasis is focused on quality assurance, value and delivering the best outcomes in line with growth and prioritising patient care.

Faye Mell, HR Director for Schoen Clinic UK said “Recruitment and retention continue to be a priority in line with our People Plan at Schoen Clinic and we do not underestimate that our colleagues are the reason for our success and exceptional patient care. As the healthcare market continues to evolve, it is essential to carefully consider how the landscape is changing and as a result, how our approach to attracting and retaining healthcare professionals must also advance. Doing what we have always done won’t set Schoen Clinic aside from our competitors or provide our patients with the incomparable care we have to offer and that is why partnering with Marc and his team at The Placement Group genuinely provides an exciting, future-focused solution to strategic workforce planning.”

Marc Clifford, Commercial Director for The Placement Group said “We have been working collaboratively with Faye and the team since the end of June and have taken a well-paced and methodical approach to consider the solutions, method and implementation that would be both beneficial and successful across their group. It has been necessary to invest time in understanding Schoen Clinic’s needs, and meeting the team and hiring managers that put their heart and soul into delivering outstanding care, all of which have been inclusive and pivotal in forming our new successful partnership. We have cultivated a bespoke solution and system with achievable and measurable milestones that incorporates all specialities and staffing groups within Schoen Clinic and as we launch this new model, it really is an exciting time to be working with such a progressive organisation that truly prioritises their patients and hardworking teams. The Placement Group has been serving the healthcare industry for over 27 years and is able to be realistic and selective in who we partner with; there are clear synergies between both The Placement Group and Schoen Clinic, not only in terms of how we invest in our people but the appetite to grow further and remain stand out providers across the sector. Our partnership is a clear indicator of our aligned values and I look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Happy Birthday NHS - Mediplacements Internal News

Happy Birthday NHS

Friday 3rd July 2020

It’s the 72nd birthday of the National Health Service this Sunday and we couldn’t be any more thankful for their presence.

It’s been an extremely challenging year and we couldn’t have made it this far without the skill, dedication and compassion of the 1.9 million NHS Staff who have gone above and beyond to help look after the nation in the battle against Covid-19.

In recognition of their efforts, on Sunday 5th July, we are all invited to once again take a moment to stop and applaud frontline staff as part of a #Thankyoutogether campaign.

In conjunction with this, there will also be a wide scale memorial held on Saturday 4th July in remembrance for many of those we lost due to the coronavirus. The #LightItBlue campaign will see famous landmarks, sport stadiums and monuments illuminate blue to mark the occasion. You can join in too by simply placing a light in your doorstep or window.

To find out more information on how you can get involved with the birthday commemorations check out the NHS England website. https://www.england.nhs.uk/nhsbirthday/

From us at Mediplacements, we would personally like to say a big heartfelt thank you to every individual that make up our amazing NHS services.

Coronavirus Information - Mediplacements Internal News

Coronavirus Information

Thursday 13th February 2020

Coronavirus Information

A coronavirus is a type of virus. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world. Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

Novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) is a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Wuhan City, China.

Precautions

The government are asking people to take simple, common-sense steps to avoid close contact with other people as much as possible, like they would with other flu viruses.

This means remaining at home for 14 days after arriving from Wuhan or Hubei Province (or elsewhere in China if you have symptoms) and not going to work, school or public areas.

Where possible, you should avoid having visitors to your home, but it’s ok for friends, family or delivery drivers to drop off food.

Why the advice has changed

This is an evolving situation and the advice has changed based on emerging information from China about the number of cases and spread of the infection from person to person.

This is a highly precautionary measure to limit the potential spread of infection;

- If you develop symptoms and have returned from mainland China.

- If you develop a fever, cough or shortness of breath, you should continue to follow the advice above. Please do not leave your home and call NHS 111 immediately.

Summary of action taken

The Government have introduced advanced monitoring at airports with direct flights from China.

A team of public health experts has been established in Heathrow to support anyone travelling in from China who feels unwell. These hubs will bring in rotational teams of 7 clinicians, working in shifts, who will be on hand to support patients on arrival. This is in addition to medical staff who are already permanently in place at all UK airports and the advice issued to all UK airports for people travelling to and from China.

The government has issued clinical guidance for the detection and diagnosis of novel coronavirus (2019-nCov), and infection prevention and control.
The Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director at PHE and Medical Director at NHSE/I have issued advice via a CAS (Central Alerting System) alert to frontline staff to increase awareness of the situation and any actions to take.

Most people who develop symptoms will get them after leaving the airport and so the priority is providing UK residents and travellers with the latest information to make sure they know what to do if they experience symptoms, and the NHS and PHE have an established plan to respond to someone who becomes unwell.

China has also introduced port-of-exit screening so people already exhibiting symptoms are not allowed to leave the country.

Diagnosis and analysis

Based on current evidence, novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) presents with flu-like symptoms including a fever, a cough, or difficulty breathing. The current evidence is that most cases appear to be mild. Those who have died in Wuhan appear to have had pre-existing health conditions.

The UK is now one of the first countries outside China to have a prototype specific laboratory test for this new disease. Healthcare professionals who are contacted by a patient with symptoms following travel to Wuhan have been advised to submit samples to PHE for testing.

Follow our Top Five Tips and ‘Getaway’ from the Winter Blues - Mediplacements Internal News

Follow our Top Five Tips and ‘Getaway’ from the Winter Blues

Monday 20th January 2020

Winter Blues

We get it, it’s not uncommon to feel down and lethargic at this time of year. With gloomy winter skies and shorter days, it can sometimes be hard to motivate yourself.

There are many top tips to get through this, our personal favourites are:

1. Stay Active – anything from a short walk, to joining a local club or gym can help you benefit from an endorphin release.

2. Keep in Touch – interaction with others can play a key part in boosting your mood. Get together with friends / family, socialise and let laughter be the best medicine.

3. Eat healthily – you hear it time and time again but what you put into your body matters. Eating more complex carbs like spinach and potatoes help as they take longer to process and don’t cause havoc with your blood sugar levels.

4. Get some fresh air – wrap up, spend more time outside and take in some natural vitamin D.

5. Failure to plan is planning for failure – give yourself something to look forward to… Here’s our cue to step in…

Win a City Break for Two and finally break out of your winter blues hibernation!

Thanks to everyone that entered our competition, it’s now ended. A winner will be selected soon and contacted.

Mission to help with hearing loss in Children - Mediplacements Internal News

Mission to help with hearing loss in Children

Monday 11th November 2019

Hearing loss in Children

Our Mediplacements Audiologists are taking on a charitable quest in Zimbabwe this November.

Miru and Hemna, along with two of their fellow students, are traveling out to the capital Harare and western rural provinces to carry out audiology clinics for children in the area.

Hearing loss has a huge impact on children in Zimbabwe as it affects their language development and makes it harder for them during education, in turn affecting their core skills and limiting their prospects.

Working with non-profit organisation Hear to Aid the group will be focusing on identifying and treating ear infections, carrying out micro-suctions, assessing hearing and fitting hearing aids so that these children can have a better quality of life.

Also, during their three weeks in the African country they will also have the privilege of giving a lecture at a local university to share their knowledge in the profession and help inspire upcoming new students to become Audiologist professionals.

However, none of this will be possible without the help and support of the public. In order to carry out their work the group need to raise a total of £1,000.

Consultant in Focus

Faye Lyons - Speech and Language Therapy team

Our Business Manager, Faye has been working with Mediplacements for 8 years.

Faye was a highly experienced Recruitment Consultant when she first joined the business with previous experience working within medical recruitment specialising in Speech and Language Therapy.

With 14 years’ experience within the field, Faye has become a very influential recruiter within the sector.

We thought we would ask Faye a few questions to help you get to know a little more about her…

What do you enjoy most about working for Mediplacements? What I like most about working here is the family feel and close bond that everyone has.

What is your career motivation? My career motivation is leading a team to success and building relationships with new and existing clients and candidates.

What would you say is your strong point? My strong point is my personal experience of liaising with SLT’s and other Therapists due to my father’s ongoing battle with a Brain Tumour which he has had for over two decades.
My dad has a glioblastoma in his brain stem. Because he has had this condition for so long it brings with it other health issues. He has to see a Speech Therapist on a regular basis and uses Think & Easy in all of his fluids. He is fed fork mashable foods which is something that happened more recently after he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer which luckily the consultants at the fantastic Royal London Hospital were able to treat successfully.

What is your most memorable moment within your role? My most memorable moments have to be when I get to meet some of the wonderful professionals. Its lovely to be able to thank them personally for everything that they do.

What has been your most challenging experience in your role? My most challenging experience in my role has been juggling my work life balance. Having two young boys aged 5 & 3 and working in such a fast-paced environment can bring its challenges, but I think I’m beginning to get the balance right.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love taking part in activities with my family, we paint pebbles hide them in parks then check the ‘love on the rocks UK’ Facebook page to see if they have been found. We enjoy our holidays too. I’ve recently started to take PT sessions to improve my fitness levels.

Candidate feedback…

"I have been a locum through Mediplacements since 2011. This is by far the best agency that I have worked for. The consultants are not only professional but also friendly which goes a long way to help me feel valued as a candidate instead of a 'number' on somebody's spreadsheet. I really enjoy calls from Faye who shows a genuine interest and understanding of my profession and career pathways which helps me to feel reassured that I will not be put forward for a job which I am not qualified for or would not enjoy doing. Recently I have made a success of running my own Speech Therapy company and I would only consider Mediplacements (and Faye) if I were to require a locum."
Beth L – Locum Speech & Language Therapist

Help us make wishes come true

Tuesday 9th July 2019

When a child is fighting a critical illness, their future is uncertain. Their whole family’s world is turned upside down. That's why wishes are so important. Once their most cherished wish is granted, a child will see that anything is possible. It gives them and their family the emotional strength they desperately need to fight their condition and hope to face their future – whatever it might hold.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a registered charity formed back in 1986. Its sole purpose is to grant life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses in the UK.

To aid in this ongoing quest to raise awareness & financial support for the charity and endeavour to make desperately ill children’s wishes become reality; twelve employees of The Placement Group will embark on the gruelling challenge that is the Royal Parks Half Marathon!

The event, taking place on 13th October will see Althea, Natasha, Richard, Chris, Everton, Julie, Sam, Chloe, Paige, Rosie, Christina and Ed take on the 13.1-mile spectacular route around Central London’s most prestigious parks.

The group, ranging from experienced marathon runners to fresh faced novices are aiming to raise a minimum of £3,600 for this very worthy cause… BUT we need your help to make this happen!

Please show your support and sponsor us today… any donation will be greatly received! Help us to help the children… even the smallest donation can make a big difference in making wishes come true.

Samantha White – BMS Team

Sam joined the company 5 and a half years ago, starting out as a Junior Consultant and progressing to the experienced Recruitment Consultant she is today.

Starting the role in 2014 with no recruitment experience, Sam was trained on the job by our experienced BMS business manager. Learning everything she knows, Sam is now an established consultant on the Biomedical Science team and is proving herself constantly with her hard work and dedication.

We thought we would ask Sam a few questions to help you get to know a little more about her…

What do you enjoy most about working for Mediplacements? I love my team, being part of the BMS team makes you feel like you are part of a family. We support each other through the good and the bad times in recruitment, we don’t feel complete if one of the team is missing.

What is your career motivation? My family are my main motivation, I want to be successful for both myself and them. I enjoy what I do and the buzz I get helping people find a new job.

What would you say is your strong point? My strong point would be relationship building, I love taking the time to get to know my candidates and clients on a personal level to get a better understanding of their requirements and needs.

What is your most memorable moment within your role? A visit I went on to one of our clients I found very rewarding as they appreciated it so much and told us we were the only agency to go and see them.

What has been your most challenging experience in your role? I find balancing my administration duties with the recruitment my biggest challenge as I like to be very organised, so I sometimes spend too long completing administration tasks.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I am a massive gym addict, I love weight training and the discipline involved. I also like to visit new places and socialise with friends.

Candidate feedback…

“I am writing to you today as I would like to express my sincere gratitude on the ongoing support provided by all at Mediplacements, particularly from my consultant Samantha White.

As a locum, I have had the chance to work with other agencies. Though ultimately, I am happy to be registered with yourselves, and at ease, knowing that any issues raised will be acted upon promptly and with an understanding ear. At times I have also dealt with other members of your team in compliance and payroll, and always in a kind and polite manner. From my experience I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone in registering with Mediplacements.”

Taking on the London Marathon - Mediplacements Internal News

Taking on the London Marathon

Wednesday 2nd May 2018

We are super proud of our colleague Jess Shinkins-Bartlett who took on the London Marathon this year in aid of raising money for Berkshire MS Therapy Centre.

The charity which provides a community spirited safe environment for people receiving treatment for Multiple Sclerosis is something that is very close to Jess’s heart as unfortunately her mum and other members of her family are candidates for the condition.

Spurred on by this, Jess completed the 26.2mile race in an amazing time of 5 hours and 18 minutes – plus she came away injury free! Which is fantastic news considering the incredibly tough conditions she was faced with on the day.

‘I typically worry about everything and although I had put in the time and effort with my training it still felt like a daunting experience. It was also just my luck that the year I signed up for the marathon it ended up being the hottest one on record since 1997!’ Said Jess, who works within our Mediplacements Mental Health Team. ‘Still, without a doubt it is my biggest achievement and I am so pleased I did it.’

Jess set her fundraising target as £1,700 which she overwhelmingly smashed, raising a final amount of £3,550 for her charity.

‘The support I have had from everyone has played a massive role with my experience of the marathon. There were times when I wanted to give up but the support and motivation from others pulled me through.’ Said Jess.

Richard Gibson – Pharmacy Team

Our Recruitment Consultant Richard is one of our newer members of the company, although he has made a huge impact in contributing to the growth of the pharmacy desk since starting 6 months ago. Before joining Mediplacements, Richard was a trainee fireman but unfortunately due to an injury just before his graduation, he was unable to complete his training. However, their loss is our gain as he has proved himself to be a great asset to the team.

We thought we would ask Richard a few questions to help you get to know a little more about him…

What do you enjoy most about working for Mediplacements? The relationships I’ve built both in and out of the office, with colleagues and locums, getting to know the different personalities.

What is your career motivation? Being respected in a job is very important to me, I like to leave the office knowing I’ve done the best I can.

What would you say is your strong point? I have a very honest approach to my work which I think my candidates find very refreshing and relate to quite well.

What is your most memorable moment within your role? I found the ideal role for a Pharmacist that only wanted to work within paediatrics and those particular roles are very hard to come by but I managed to place them and they were very happy.

What has been your most challenging experience in your role? Looking after the high volume of candidates, balancing my workload evenly and dealing with the demands and requirements of each individual.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Spend time with my two sons and take them on fun days out, rescue cats from trees, the usual modern day superhero kind of stuff. I’m a recruitment consultant by day and a DJ by night, I do it mainly as a hobby but have a residency in a bar in London.

Candidate feedback…

“I have been working as locum for Mediplacements for few months and it’s a great experience! Joining up was quick, easy and effortless. My consultant Richard is amazing... he is very professional, friendly and always willing to help, going that extra mile to find you the right job. I would definitely recommend Mediplacements to all health professionals who want to work in the UK.”

From Recruitment Consultant to Professional Cricketer - Mediplacements Internal News

From Recruitment Consultant to Professional Cricketer

Thursday 12th April 2018

Here at Mediplacements we are proud to be sponsoring former Recruitment Consultant turned professional cricketer Jamie Porter, for yet another season. Jamie was a recruitment consultant on our Allied Health team and left Mediplacements back in 2014 after being offered his dream opportunity to play professional cricket for Essex County Cricket Club.

Jamie had a natural talent for recruiting but an even bigger talent for cricket and after impressing in his three seasons of professional cricket, the opening Essex pace bowler had his first call up to join the England Lions team for their tournament against South Africa in 2017.

After impressing in his debut, he then got the call to join the England Lions Australian tour, however unfortunately due to injury he was unable to go. He has spent the winter recovering from his stress fracture of the spine and training to strengthen his back up so he was able to attend the England Lions tour against the West Indies.

Jamie has recently arrived home from the tour having learned a lot and is ready to start the season with Essex, once again representing our brand on his bat.

Steve Porter, the Managing Director of The Placement Group and father of cricketer Jamie Porter says “We are all very proud of Jamie and his success, he showed the same dedication to recruitment as his cricket so it’s no surprise that he has taken his game onto a new level each year”.

Get to know a little more about Jamie…

How has your life changed from being a recruitment consultant to professional sportsman? Playing for Essex has changed my life in so many ways, I get to travel all over the country doing what I love. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with being a professional sportsman also as a lot of young cricketers look up to you to set a good example.

What are your highlights in your new career so far? Playing for the England Lions and winning the Division One County Championship with Essex have to be the biggest highlights of my career.

What are your career goals? My overall goal is to play for England, that has always been my dream and what I am working towards. This season, my goal is to take as many wickets as I can for Essex and hopefully retain our title as the County Championship winners.

Are there any elements you miss about being a recruitment consultant? I would get the same buzz when I made a placement as a consultant as I get when I take wickets for Essex, it’s my competitive nature, I strive to be the best in anything I do. I miss the people and the atmosphere in the office, but I still go back to visit whenever I can.

Jamie Worrell - Speech and Language Therapy Team.

Jamie has been working for Mediplacements on the Speech and Language Therapy desk for 2 years now and has had some great success in his role.

Before joining us, he owned his own company airbrushing for magazines which has helped him to bring lots of creative new ideas to the role. Jamie is the joker of the office, he always puts a smile on everyone’s face but also always knows when to be professional.

We thought we would ask Jamie a few questions to help you get to know a little more about him…

What do you enjoy most about working for Mediplacements?
The people make it a great place to work, everyone is very friendly and helpful and we can all have a laugh and a joke throughout the day.

What is your career motivation? As I am fairly new to the recruitment industry, my goal is to establish myself within the sales environment and progress as much as I can.

What would you say is your strong point? I like to think I’m quite a personable guy, I’m good at building relationships with both my candidates and clients. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I’m also a great cook, I like to think of myself as the office chef and like to cook for everyone.

What is your most memorable moment within your role? When I made it onto the high achievers lunch within my first 6 months at Mediplacements, that just boosted my confidence to carry on progressing in my role.

What has been your most challenging experience in your role? I worked for myself for 10 years so I think the biggest challenge was integrating back into the office environment but I have surprised myself how much I have enjoyed being in the thick of it again.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love cooking and experimenting with lots of new dishes, watching sports and playing golf. I do quite a bit of charity work, organising events and activities but I seem to spend most of my time just making my wife miserable I think.

Candidate feedback…

“Since joining Mediplacements last Summer, I have been constantly impressed by Jamie, who has exceeded my expectations at all points. From understanding my (rather unique) clinical speciality and skills and finding appropriate positions, to providing me with choice and options, which are always clearly explained, expertly negotiated and openly communicated. Jamie is not only prompt and efficient with his correspondence and actions, but goes the extra mile to ensure that I am happy and settled in my position, which has definitely secured my loyalty to Mediplacements, as well as resulting in several referrals for new locums.”

Volunteer with Crisis in 2017 - Mediplacements Internal News

Volunteer with Crisis in 2017

Monday 16th October 2017

Cosyfeet have teamed up with Crisis at Christmas in an urgent call for volunteer podiatrists in London, Newcastle and Edinburgh this Christmas. Could you work a few shifts from December 24th to 29th this year?

Crisis welcomed a total of 3,911 guests in 2016, all of whom have much less opportunity for foot care than the rest of the population and yet have far greater demands on their feet. The results can be debilitating and painful. 375 of those guests benefited from the Crisis Podiatry service, which was run by just 53 volunteers.

This year, Crisis are hoping to attract even more volunteers, to treat even more people in need. They are seeking qualified podiatrists to treat their guests, and podiatry students or foot health practitioners to help run the service by welcoming guests and preparing them for treatment.

The Crisis Podiatry Service provides a range of treatments and foot care advice for guests, mainly treating corns and calluses, mycotic and gryphotic nails, blistering and maceration.

London volunteers meet at the Crisis Hub at the start of each shift to be briefed and assigned to a team. Transport is provided to and from treatment centres between December 24th and December 29th. Shift times are 9.00am to 6.00pm. Clinics run from 10am to 5.00pm.

Volunteers are also required in Edinburgh and Newcastle on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Independent foot health practitioner, Dorothy Thwaites, has experience of volunteering as an assistant podiatrist for Crisis in Edinburgh. She comments:

“It’s great to step out of your comfort zone and do your bit to help. We’re all connected after all, so it’s good to be supportive of one another.“

For further information, contact the Crisis at Christmas Services Team by emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call 0300 636 1000.

Cosyfeet supports Crisis each year by donating socks to users of the volunteer podiatry service, and by appealing for volunteers from the podiatry community.
