The London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony went off with a bang, quite literally on Friday, 27th July, lighting the East London skies with a spectacular display of fireworks to declare the Games officially open!
After 7 years of planning, there was much speculation around what would be unveiled at the ceremony and of what the world could expect from esteemed British producer Danny Boyle on the opening night.
Titled ‘Isles of Wonder’ the ceremony was a fantastic theatrical medley of the best of British; revolutions, sport, literature and the digital age, to name just a few.
A key highlight for us was the celebration and tribute to the NHS and renowned London Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital. What was great about these performances in particular was that amidst the trained dancers were some of our very own NHS workers and Healthcare Professionals, all those involved delivered an incredible performance which was watched by billions of viewers around!
As the night went on, the Ceremony welcomed the finest athletes from more than 200 nations and saw the unveiling of the Olympic Cauldron, stunningly designed by Thomas Heatherwick. The mystery surrounding the symbolic flame, which was ignited by seven young athletes, made for a spectacular finale; spectators watched in awe as 205 copper petals rose to form a single flame, each representing the competing nations coming together for the Games!
It truly was a Ceremony ‘for everyone!’
We would like to wish Team GB the best of luck and are looking forward to watching the games unfold this week!
